Aug 31 (Reuters) – A federal judge ruled on Monday that New York cannot enforce a state law it enacted in 2024 that sought to force oil companies to contribute $75 billion over 25 years into a fund that will pay for damage caused by climate change.
Chief U.S. District Judge Brenda Sannes in Syracuse sided with a group of Republican state attorneys general and industry groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in finding the Democratic-led state’s measure was preempted by federal law.
