PEORIA, Ill. – The Center for Prevention of Abuse is running its 38th annual Duck Race this weekend.
The Center’s CEO Carol Merna says they started with 35,000 ducks, but there are still some available.
“The community always comes around and rallies, and we’re thankful for that. But, we’ve got until Saturday at 1:00 to sell all those ducks…and I’m confident we’ll be able to do it,” Merna says.
100-percent of the money raised with the Duck Race stays here in Central Illinois, funding services for victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, human trafficking, senior abuse and prevention education.
“Since all of our services are free and confidential, there’s very little barrier when you are ready to receive services…to actually asking for help. The hard part is getting to the point of being ready to ask for help,” Merna says.
Saturday’s Duck Race at East Peoria’s Eastside Centre begins at 1 p.m. Ducks are available up to race time, unless they sell out first. The top prize for the first duck to cross the finish line is $10,000 cash. Other prizes include: $5,000 and $2,500 cash, jewelry, prize bundles and packages.
Last year the Duck Race raised over $215,000 for survivors of abuse, and all 35,000 ducks were sold.
