PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. (25 News) – Hundreds of workers at Liberty Steel and Wire in Bartonville are being furloughed because of a downturn in the market for industrial wire products made at the plant, a company spokesperson said on Friday.
The spokesperson, Stephanie AlKhafaji, told 25News that the action is temporary and “we are looking forward to bringing all employees back.”
Alkhafaji said the majority of employees impacted by the furloughs work in the wire mill, which is where the company makes industrial fencing and other finished goods.
She said about 300 people work in the wire mill, but the exact number of employees being furloughed is still being determined.
Different groups of workers will be furloughed at different times over the next two weeks, said Alkhafaji. She said some will be furloughed Monday, July 13, while others will be furloughed the following week.
With a total workforce of just over 600 people, Liberty Steel is located at 7000 South Adams Street.
