WASHINGTON, D.C. – Illinois’ Republican Congressmen are raising questions about whether the State Board of Elections is complying with federal election laws.
16th District Congressman Darin LaHood of Dunlap, as well as Congressmen Mike Bost and Mary Miller, sent a letter regarding the matter on Monday, seeking the board’s compliance with an oversight request from the House Administration Committee.
The letter asks the board to answer questions about the accuracy of the state’s voter rolls, as well as if it’s complying with the National Voter Registration Act.
In the letter, LaHood claims Illinois failed to perform proper voter roll maintenance “for years,” as well as implement measures, such as requiring voter ID.
“The State of Illinois has an obligation to provide a transparent and complete response to this inquiry to ensure our elections are secure and strengthen Illinoisans faith in our state’s electoral process,” LaHood said in the letter.
In December, the Justice Department sued Illinois and at least 19 other states to seek access to its voter rolls. The State Board of Elections declined access, citing state and federal privacy laws.
