SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The driver that led multiple police agencies on a chase from central Illinois to Springfield has died.
The chase began Tuesday morning when East Peoria Police officers attempted a traffic stop of a suspect wanted by Washington Police on criminal sexual assault charges.
Illinois State Police says troopers successfully deployed stop sticks and disabled the suspect’s vehicle on Interstate 55 southbound near Sangamon Avenue in Springfield.
Troopers found the suspect with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and rendered medical aid. The suspect was taken to a hospital in serious condition, but later died.
The case remains under investigation.
