WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Dick Durbin says it’s no coincidence that the anniversary of the Watergate Hotel break-in happened 50 years ago this week, as public hearings continue on the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“For nearly a half-century, the Watergate scandal really ranked as America’s greatest Constitutional test since the Civil War,” Durbin (D-Springfield), said Tuesday on the Senate floor. “Then came January 6, 2021. An angry mob, summoned by a defeated President, attacked this Capitol building — attacked this chamber.”
Durbin, Senate Majority Whip, says the first two January 6th hearings have already proven a planned riot occurred.
“In its first two public hearings, the committee has shown the attack on the Capitol was not a demonstration that changed spontaneously and became a riot,” said Durbin. “The attack on our nation’s capitol, the attack on this chamber, was the result of a plan — a violent effort to prevent the peaceful transfer of power from the Trump administration to the Biden administration.
Durbin says then-President Donald Trump is to blame. But he also places some blame on Senator Mitch McConnell and Republicans in his chamber, filibustering the original attempt to create a bi-partisan independent commission to investigate the attack.
Durbin also discussed a report his Senate Judiciary Committee already has released on the attack. You can find it by CLICKING HERE.
