PEORIA, Ill. – An outbreak at a prison and two deaths highlighted Friday’s COVID-19 report from the Peoria City/County Health Department.
Peoria and Tazewell Counties recorded a death apiece.
Peoria’s death was to a female in her 90s who lived at Hertiage Health in Chillicothe. The deceased Tazewell resident was a woman in her 70s who lived at Timber Creek Rehab.
The tri-county’s total amount of COVID-related deaths rose to 109, with 53 of those deaths from Peoria, 45 in Tazewell, and 11 in Woodford.
Tazewell’s overall COVID numbers have spiked, largely because of an outbreak at Federal Corrections Institution, which accounted for 60 of Tazewell’s 95 cases.
Peoria reported 72 new cases, while Woodford added three to its total, for a count of 170 new active cases.
74 people were in area hospitals with the virus or, at least, with suspected cases of it. 23 of them were in intensive care.
The area’s recovery rate dropped to 83.6%.
As we move into the colder months, with less time outside, Peoria City/County Health Department Administrator Monica Hendrickson said it will be harder to socially distance.
“While we gather inside, we need to be much more vigilant about social distancing and wearing masks. Likewise, we’re also running into a season where people are going to have other viruses that come through, specifically, influenza,” Hendrickson said.
Hendrickson added, due to COVID-19, flu shots are imperative this year.
