PEORIA, Ill. — After just clearing a vehicle fire, Peoria fire crews were called just after 10:30 p.m. Monday to the 1200 block of N. Sheridan for a working fire.
A passerby flagged down firefighters, telling them a house nearby was in flames.
Crews entered the home through the front door and made contact with the residents, who were unaware of the fire.
“Heavy fire and smoke was coming from the roof and the attic area of the home. The fire was under control in about 15 minutes, but caused extensive damage,” Batallion Chief Michael Hughes said.
Investigators said the cause of the fire was electrical.
The home was reportedly equipped with smoke detectors, but not in the attic.
The Red Cross was called in to assist two adults and four children.
