MORTON, Ill. – Another former K-Mart store in the area is getting new life as a U-Haul Self-Storage facility.
The former U-Haul in Morton on West Jackson is set to become a U-Haul Self Storage facility, and will become fully operational by the end of the year.
Officials say moving supplies and portable storage containers are already available at the location, but the 95,000 square foot facility with 750 climate controlled self storage rooms will be ready later this year.
Company officials say they’re making the move in order to meet company demand.
“Big-box stores tend to sit vacant for a long time because they are so large and can only accommodate a certain type of business,” said Aaron Freeman, U-Haul Area District Vice President, in a news release. “U-Haul can fully utilize the space and do so without the environmental impact of building a new facility from the ground up. Our adaptive reuse program is a green initiative that every city stands behind.”
Former K-Mart stores in Galesburg and Springfield are among those in Illinois which are already U-Haul Self Storage facilities. In recent years, other U-Haul Self Storage facilities have opened in the Peoria area.
The Morton K-Mart store reportedly closed in 2016.
