PEORIA, Ill. — Illinois’ new emergency rules may not make it past committee.
On Friday, Gov. J-B Pritzker announced a three-step plan to help encourage masks and social distancing at businesses, schools and day care centers statewide.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, he doesn’t think the governor’s plan, which must go through Illinois’ Joint Rules Committee first, is enforceable.
“He tried to push a few things through earlier, before they went to session, but it was going to get voted down, so he withdrew them. Again, I don’t think this is one that’s going to get a lot of support,” Ardis said.
Pritzker’s plan would include several chances for compliance before a penalty would be issued, including a written warning and an order to reduce the number of patrons on the premises to meet safety guidelines.
Ardis said the governor’s plan puts too much pressure on businesses that are already struggling just to stay open.
“Obviously, it’s well-intentioned, I just don’t see how it’s going to be supported very well,” Ardis said.
