PANA, Ill. – Illinois State Police says an internal investigation is being conducted after a state trooper shot a man wanted in a double homicide.
Officials say the Division of Internal Investigation is leading the investigation, with any results being given to the State’s Attorney in Christian County for review and if they warrant charges.
A 26-year veteran of the force Saturday afternoon is believed to have shot the suspect on Route 51 just north of Pana, in the Decatur and Springfield areas..
The man had been wanted for the fatal shootings of two women in the Collinsville area near Saint Louis.
Officials believe the man pointed a gun at the trooper, leading the trooper to firing at the suspect.
The double homicide suspect is hospitalized with what were described as “serious, life-threatening injuries.”
Under Illinois law, ISP says the internal investigation must be conducted.
