PEORIA, Ill. — After a round of COVID-19 retesting of Peoria County Jail inmates who originally tested negative, Sheriff Brian Asbell on Friday reported three new cases.
That brought the number of detainees who have tested positive to 37.
Of the 194 detainees who tested negative during the first round, 103 have been retested. There have been ten refusals, Asbell said.
“Those that refuse, even though they’re not counted as a positive, we treat them as a positive, where they have to stay on quarantine status,” he said.
115 tests, he said, were either awaiting results or waiting to be tested again.
No new employees tested positive, and the ones who have, Asbell said, have recovered, for the most part.
“I think we still have about five out, but most have had the ten days out without signs or symptoms, so they’ve been allowed to come back to work,” he said.
The jail was remaining on lockdown.
