Several vehicle burglaries have been reported in the city over the last week, and the Peoria Police Department is reminding the community to lock their vehicles.
Police are also reminding residents to not tempt a thief. Even if a vehicle is locked, the only thing that can stop a thief is just a smashed window away. If valuable items must be stored in a vehicle, do not put them in plain sight.
Popular items taken from vehicles include: cellphones, laptops, iPods, iPads, wallets, purses, loose change, GPS’s, or small and easily concealed items.
Police say vehicle burglaries are almost always a crime of opportunity.
Another tip from the police department is to not leave spare keys or the vehicle keys inside. Even if it is warm and the vehicle is running with the air conditioning, you may come back and find your car missing.
Police would also like to remind residents to park in well lit areas, and to also report suspicious behavior, people, and/vehicles. Also, look out for neighbors and their homes and vehicles as well.
