PEKIN, Ill. — Where can you cool off when it’s this hot?
Local health departments are advising the public to take precautions in excessive heat.
But, due to COVID-19, many buildings that are typically available as Cooling Centers are closed, have reduced capacity or other limitations.
State facilities that are available for a break from the heat include
the Department of Human Services buildings in Peoria (211 Fulton, Suite 300, M-F 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) and Pekin (200 S. Second Street, Suite 20 and 2970 Court Street, Sunset Plaza, M-F 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.).
Tazewell County Health Department Spokesperson Sara Sparkman asked that the people use the Cooling Centers at the Human Services buildings as a last resort due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus.
“We are encouraging a lot of water intake. Wear light-colored clothing if you’re outside, and limit your outdoor activities if possible,” Sparkman said.
The health departments remind the public to never leave children, the elderly, or pets inside a parked vehicle in excessive heat.
Check in with family, friends and neighbors who may not be using air conditioning.
Take care of pets with extra water and make sure they have a protected area where they can get away from the sun outdoors.
