SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Department of Public Health is investigating a foodborne illness across multiple states.
The IDPH has received confirmation of 23 cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the cylospora parasite.
Cases reported in Illinois say they were sick beginning mid-May.
An investigation has lead to links to consumption of store brand packaged garden salads from Aldi, Hy-vee, and Jewel-Osco.
People can be infected by consuming food or water contaminated with feces with the parasite.
The IDPH said symptoms typically begin a week after exposure to the parasite.
Symptoms include:
- Watery diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Cramping, bloating, or increases gas
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Low fever
Symptoms are treated with an antibiotic.
