SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Gov. J-B Pritzker announced on Wednesday $900 million in grants for Illinois communities and businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pritzker said for many people, weathering the crisis begins with putting a roof over their family’s heads.
“Nearly one in three Illinois adults have either missed last month’s rent or mortgage payment, or are worried about their ability to pay next month’s rent or mortgage payment on time,” Pritzker said.
Two new assistance programs to help struggling Illinoisans pay their rent or mortgage will launch in August.
There are also business interruption grants for owners who haven’t been able to open because of the coronavirus or recent property damage, as well as money for minority farmers, mental health services and food banks.
Illinois Senator Kimberly Lightford, of Maywood, said the money will go towards several areas.
“The programs we are announcing rebuild our small business, provide housing assistance, jobs, food and more. With specific attention to underserved communities,” Lightford said.
There is money for minority farmers, part-time summer jobs and seniors in need of meals and medicine.
