PEORIA, Ill. — Young Revolution, a local group advocating for unity in Peoria, organized the “Are We Next” rally downtown on Sunday.
The event began at the Peoria County Courthouse. Organizers led a silent march to the Gateway Building in honor of Peoria victims of police brutality.
Young Revolution held the City’s first peaceful protest last weekend in response to the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.
The event was mostly peaceful. But, Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell said a boat pulled up behind the Gateway Building and caused a disturbance during the rally.
“They had a political flag and very loud music. And, then there were quite a few hand gestures and some flashing nudity from the boat. They were there with the intent to rile up the crowd,” Asbell said.
The crowd of 1,500 to 2,000 people were asked to lay on the ground for eight minutes and 46 seconds, in solidarity for George Floyd.
