PEORIA, Ill. — A Peoria woman’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
Peoria Police were called to the 500 block of W. Loucks around 5:16 a.m. Sunday in regards to a unresponsive female in a vehicle.
Officers located the female and attempted to perform life saving measures but the woman was pronounced deceased at 7:11 a.m., according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
“On our initial exam we didn’t find anything that was obvious,” Harwood said. “She did have some obvious signs of bleeding but we didn’t have an obvious source of the bleeding.”
The victim, identified at 34-year-old Keishana Currie, was then taken in for x-rays.
“We noticed on the x-rays that she had a projectile in her head, a bullet in other words. We did an autopsy the following day, and the autopsy demonstrated that she suffered a single gunshot wound to the head, and that bullet entered her mouth,” Harwood said.
Currie also suffered blunt force trauma to the head and likely died instantly.
“Information that was obtained in collaboration with the Peoria Police Department lead this to be a homicide investigation,” Harwood said.
The case remains under investigation by the Peoria Police Department and Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
