PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. — The Peoria County Board Thursday night adopted an amended budget with cuts that aren’t as severe as expected. The cuts are due to a significant loss in revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic.
On a 12-6 vote, the county board approved an amendment to the 2020 budget calling for 10.5% reductions in every department, for a total of $12 million. That’s less than original plans to cut 13.1% from each department for a total of $15 million in savings.
Under the new budget plan, the 10.5% reductions would mean cutting jobs and services. The board didn’t go into specifics about how each department would be impacted, but said they would not consider putting the financial burden on county taxpayers.
The amended budget accounts for just over $12 million of the $16 million projected deficit. The budget committee said additional cuts may have to be made.
