GALESBURG, Ill. – An area hospital has closed it doors for now, weeks after getting notice that it would no longer be receiving federal Medicare funding.
Signs posted on the outside of Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Knox County say the facility is closed.
This, after receiving federal notice from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services that it was not in compliance with various policies including a governing body, patient rights, nursing services, and the physical environment.
The formerly not-for-profit hospital became for-profit in 2004, a previous owner filing for bankruptcy several years ago, and being owned by a Michigan-based doctor since 2020. Most of its surgical staff had been fired in recent weeks.
Its clinic division filed bankruptcy in recent weeks as well, but it still reportedly receiving patients.
