Peoria, Ill. – Peoria County has issued a traffic collision alert in the wake of Saturday’s winter storm that resulted in as much as 4.5 inches of snow and snow packed and icy roads early Sunday morning.
Citizens involved in vehicle crashes in Peoria County where no one is injured should exchange information and report the incident in person to the records bureau at the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, 301 N. Maxwell Road, as soon as reasonably possible, but within 48 hours of the alert being canceled.
City of Peoria snow fighters have been busy all night clearing the city’s major routes and residential areas of snow. But colder weather behind the storm necessitates a return to the major routes Sunday.
“We do have to go back and treat them now with some salt and some liquid to hopefully get some of the snow pack and ice pack to loosen up,” City Public Works Director of Operations Sie Maroon said. “We will then go back to the residential routes for the duration of Sunday and even going into Sunday night.”
“Dealing with the cold temperatures really had an impact on what’s happened with the streets Sunday morning,” Maroon said.
Maroon said sunny to partly sunny skies forecast Sunday will also helping in removing the snow and ice pack from the city’s major routes.
“That’s why we want to get the treatment on those streets as soon as possible,” Maroon said. “Even though it’s still going to be extremely cold, we’ll still get some use out of the salt and liquid that’s going to help break up that ice pack and snow pack.”
“The streets are definitely travelable, you just need to go slow. It’s just that they’re slick and some areas are slicker than others.”
Maroon emphasized residential streets will be plowed curb to curb but they will not be treated, “unless there’s an absolutely necessary reason to put it down on like a hill or a hazardous area.”
