PEORIA, Ill. — Until further notice, basketball enthusiasts won’t be able to play on Peoria Park District courts.
To help curb further spread of COVID-19, the organization has taken down its hoops.
President Robert Johnson explained the decision.
“I want to keep these young people safe and healthy, because we need them for the future,” he said.
“So, unfortunately, I had to go ahead because there was a problem where they were continuing to gather.”
Jonhson said this will remain the case until the pandemic is over.
“Until that happens, we’re unfortunately going to have to make sure,” he said.
“We’ve been told the situation could get worse. And I don’t want to put our young people and our kids and our community at risk.”
Johnson said the Park District was enlisting the help of the Peoria Police Department to enforce the rules.
