PEORIA, Ill. — Illinois is facing a critical period in its fight against COVID-19.
Doug Kasper, Interim section head of infectious disease at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria, said most people will show symptoms of the coronavirus within 10 to 14 days of exposure.
It’s been exactly a week since Gov. J-B Pritzker shut down bars and restaurants statewide to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
As of Monday afternoon, Illinois’ total number of COVID-19 cases was 1,285. The state has seen 12 deaths so far due to the virus.
“What you’re seeing today in those numbers, you can feel confident reflect about two weeks ago. But, anything that’s happened since then still remains to be seen,” Kasper said.
Kasper told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, we will start seeing the benefits of closing businesses this week, and in coming weeks.
“It was a great move in our area to take early action a week ago. It is reassuring to see the numbers in our region remain so very manageable. But, we are still highly vigilant watching for this next week or so period of time,” Kasper said.
Kasper said there was a gap of about a week before Illinois enacted measures to reduce exposure to COVID-19. He insists it is still crucial to be vigilant about social distancing and washing their hand often.
