BERLIN (AP) – Desperate travelers in cars and trucks are choking European borders. They have created traffic jams miles long as they sought to get back home before borders slammed shut.
Truckers are trying to deliver critical supplies to help nations cope with calamity of the quickly spreading coronavirus. But European measures to allow essential goods to flow while stopping travelers have so far been ineffective.
The number of people infected worldwide crested the 200,000 mark and deaths topped 8,000, with the number of people now recovered at more than 82,000, according to a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.
