WASHINGTON (AP) – President Donald Trump wants the government to send checks to Americans in the next two weeks in an effort to curb the economic cost of the coronavirus outbreak.
“I think we are going to do something that gets money to them as quickly as possible,” Trump said.
Trump said there are several options on how to get the money to Americans, and he wants to quickest option.
“There’s some very good ways of getting the money out and getting it out quickly. Payroll tax is one way but it does come over a period months, many months,” Trump said. “And, we want to do something much faster than that.”
That’s according to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. He said Tuesday that “The president has instructed me we have to do this now.”
He didn’t give details except to say the amount should be significant and millionaires would not get it. The announcement came as the White House asked Congress to approve a massive economic rescue package for businesses and taxpayers.
“We want to make sure Americans get money in their pockets quickly. We want to make sure small business owners has access to funds. We want to make sure that hotels, airlines, we have an entire package. We’ll be laying out those details later today,” Mcuchin said.
