PEORIA, Ill. – Former Peoria City Councilwoman Camille Gibson has passed away.
Gibson died on August 20th at the age of 89. She is the second former member of the Peoria City Council to die this month, after Eric Turner died on Saturday.
Gibson was appointed to the council twice, in 1988 and 1990, before winning a full-term as an at-large councilwoman in 1991.
Former Councilman Chuck Grayeb remembered Gibson as a “tireless advocate” for Peoria’s heritage neighborhoods.
“She was always there whenever there was a problem, she’d work with the at-larges and the other councilmen to come up with a resolution, always interested in allocating any grant money that would be available to help the older neighborhoods,” Grayeb said. “She was a powerhouse, indeed.”
Grayeb says one of her bigger impacts was helping Peoria’s heritage neighborhoods, and passing landlord regulations and reforms.
In addition to her work on the city council, Gibson served on the Peoria County Board of Election Commissioners, and was a history professor at Bradley University.
