PEORIA, Ill. – Class is back in session in the River City.
Wednesday is the first full day of school for all of Peoria Public Schools. Valeska Hinton ECEC started their school year on July 22nd, while Knoxville Center started on July 13th.
For Superintendent Jerry Bell, it’s his first full school year as the leader of the district, after starting the job on July 1st.
Bell says students and parents should expect to see some of those “first wonderings,” such as whether their schedules are correct or if they’re going to the right classes. But he says they should see a lot of friendly faces to help them out.
Bell says one of his top priorities as the new school year gets underway is making sure the district’s buses are on time and running.
“The teachers and principals are going to be fine, they’re going to be there in the buildings, but it’s just getting our kids there on-time, safely, is what keeps me up,” Bell said.
Bell says he is planning to continue a tradition that his predecessor, Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat, conducted on the first day of the school year. He plans to visit all of the district’s school buildings on the first day to make sure everything is running smoothly.
Bell says there are no new policies of note for the new school year, but he is reminding parents of the district’s cell phone ban, enacted before it was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker last week. He’s also reminding parents and students of the district’s clear backpack policy.
