Peoria, Ill — It’s clear now there is bi-partisan opposition to a proposed repeal of Illinois’ Parental Notification of Abortion Act of 1995.
The repeal measure passed the Illinois State Senate during veto session Tuesday night by a vote of 32-22.
However, 9 Democrats either voted against the proposal or voted to abstain.
The Chicago Tribune reports there are many Illinois politicians who may be leery of backing highly controversial proposals thanks to the upcoming redistricting process.
Illinois is one of 38 states requiring some form of parental notification for abortion decisions.
Abortion rights groups argue that keeping the state’s current notification law in place hurts girls who have abusive parents or those with parents who may not otherwise be helpful in a teen pregnancy.
Opponents say it’s wrong to think underage girls have the capacity to make a decision about abortion without telling their parents.
They say it’s also an affront to parental rights.
Bi-partisan opponents of the measure say it will also make it easier for sex traffickers to abuse teenage girls.
The State House was set to vote on the measure on Wednesday.
