PEORIA, Ill. – A man has been given the maximum sentence in a deadly hit-and-run in South Peoria two years ago.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 41-year-old John Timothy Jr. was sentenced on Friday to 15 years for the August 2023 crash at Howett and South Western. The crash killed 28-year-old Akeem Alexander.
Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by Timothy’s Land Rover. Police found Alexander lying face down in the road near a bicycle, but the Land Rover was gone.
Police later found the vehicle with heavy front-end damage on Antoinette, with surveillance footage showing Timothy running a red light at a high rate of speed before striking Alexander.
At the sentencing hearing on Friday, Alexander’s brother told the court the impact caused Akeem to be thrown more than 250 feet. He urged the court to impose consequences for taking a life and leaving.
