PEORIA, Ill. – The identity of the victim in a fatal officer involved shooting Tuesday in Peoria’s East Bluff has been identified.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says an autopsy was conducted Wednesday on 41-year-old Brandon Lewis of Peoria. He says Lewis suffered a single gunshot wound and died moments after the injury, despite resuscitative efforts by Peoria Police and EMS.
Peoria Police were called to the area of Glen Oak and Prospect at around 5:15 P.M. on Tuesday on reports of a suspicious person. One officer used their Taser after Lewis allegedly started swinging a wooden bat and striking one officer, while another officer discharged their firearm.
Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting is under an independent investigation by Illinois State Police.

PEORIA, Ill. – A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in Peoria’s East Bluff.
Peoria Police issued a statement from Chief Eric Echevarria saying the man allegedly swung a wooden baseball bat at officers after they were called to investigate reports of a suspicious person in the area of NE Glen Oak Avenue and N. Prospect Road.
Around 5:15 p.m., the man reportedly started swinging the bat, hitting one of the officers.
The chief’s statement says one officer discharged his gun while another used a taser to take the man into custody, after which he became unresponsive.
The man was pronounced dead despite life-saving measures that were performed at the scene.
The man’s identity has not been released. The Peoria Coroner will determine the cause of death.
In accordance with state law, Illinois State Police will conduct an independent investigation.
Once the ISP’s investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
