MORTON, Ill. (25 News)– Pathway Ministries has launched a new project in Morton…a transitional home for women.
For nearly 70 years, Pathway Ministries in Peoria has been helping the less fortunate across Central Illinois get back on their feet.
The new house in Morton will provide an affordable place to stay for women after they’ve completed a stay in a homeless shelter. For up to three years, they can live there while working or pursuing an education.
Pathway Ministries Executive Director John Rocke says he hopes this home will be an invitation to be part of Morton, not just a place for women to rest their heads.
“We want our ladies to feel very welcome in the community, and be a part of the community, and we want the community to embrace and share and learn how to care for some of the least and lost in our society,” Rocke says.
Pathway Ministries will encourage residents to be members of local churches, and for churches to help the women with lawn care and transportation.
According to the Morton Chamber of Commerce, there’s been no criticism or resistance to the transitional home, even though it will help people recover from addiction and homelessness.
“We can help support and encourage these women as they start the next chapter in their lives, to be able to be a community where they can find a sense of belonging and a sense of worth,” Chamber Executive Director Kim Litwiller says.
Five women will move into the home on Saturday.
“This will be my next step on my journey with people who are like-minded, and we are all looking forward to moving ahead. We’ll help each other!” one of the future residents says.
