MORTON, Ill. – The Village of Morton and Morton School District are splitting the cost to continue to improve crosswalk safety near the district’s six schools.
The collaborative effort is helping to ensure Morton and the school district are meeting today’s standard for crosswalks by installing rapid flashing beacon lights in designated areas.
Morton has already installed the lights at Morton High, Morton Junior High, and Jefferson Elementary School. This time, lights will be installed at crossings at Grundy Elementary, Lettie Brown Elementary, and near Lincoln Elementary School on S. Nebraska and E. Crestwood Streets.
The village and the Morton School District split the cost of $215,000 evenly down the middle, with both paying $107,500.
Morton Public Works Director Craig Loudermilk told 25 News this partnership will help reduce the risk of potential traffic incidents.
“I wouldn’t say these are dangerous areas, but there is a lot of traffic, especially at the peak hours, which would be before school and then after school in some cases. There’s always a larger risk to have an incident, and so the time is now to update them to the latest standard,” Loudermilk said.
He added that once these latest installments are complete, Morton will continue to address other issues like repairing sidewalks and inspecting road ramps.
