PEORIA, Ill. – It’s the 44th year of the St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run.
Co-founder Mike McCoy spoke with WMBD’s “Greg and Dan” on Tuesday morning as the caravan made their way out of town.
“We’ve got about 180 runners going down, 12 cooks, 23 vehicles (motor homes), three vans, a bus and a trailer.”
McCoy says when they get to Memphis, they’ll have meetings, a meal, some tours, then rest up for a big day on Wednesday.
“We’ll be at the hospital (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital) at 7:00, and we have a program in the morning and more tours. Then the send-off. We’ll leave the hospital about 11:00 (a.m.) tomorrow, and start back,” McCoy says.
Last year, people raised over $11 million for St. Jude. Organizers hope to raise $1 million alone during this year’s telethon. Central Illinois typically raises the most money per capita than any other St. Jude affiliate outside of Memphis.
To date, St. Jude Runs has raised $27 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The Memphis to Peoria runners will arrive back in Peoria Saturday afternoon…meeting up with 2,500 satellite runners from 30-plus communities at the Peoria Civic Center.
The St. Jude Telethon will follow their celebration at 6:30 on WEEK.
