CANTON, Ill. – Fulton County’s largest city was the site of political protesters from both sides of the aisle on Sunday.
25 News reports the Fulton County 50501 Movement had organized a “Good Trouble” protest in Canton, as part of nationwide protests that honored late Congressman John Lewis.
The group protests Trump administration policies such as mass deportations and spending cuts. Co-founder Gayle Blodgett says those policies are not what the United States stands for.
“Our priorities should be for human rights and taking care of people. The cuts that are being done are taking things away from people who are the most in need,” Blodgett said.
Members of the Make America Great Again movement staged their own rally nearby in support of the Trump administration agenda.
Republican Fulton County Board member Landon Smith tells 25 News that it’s important for everyone to share their views.
“It’s a part of the First Amendment for everyone to express their opinions. So, I encourage not just Republicans to come out here today and join us. I encourage the Democrats to come and support their views as well,” Smith said.
The 50501 rally started in the parking lot of First Congregational Church UCC and moved through Locust and Main Streets.
