PEORIA, Ill. – A man will spend numerous decades in prison after setting his girlfriend on fire at a Peoria apartment complex nearly three years ago.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 43-year-old Daniel Pace was sentenced Wednesday to 60 years in the Department of Correction for Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Domestic Battery. He was found guilty on both counts in May of this year.
The incident occurred during an argument between Pace and the victim at the Landmark Apartment Complex in August of 2022. That’s when Pace had grabbed a bottle of vodka, poured it over her head, and flicked a lighter twice to set her on fire.
Prosecutors say the victim suffered burns on 30% of her body, including third-degree burns on 19% of her skin.
During sentencing, the judge reportedly called Pace an incredibly violent and evil person that forfeited his right to live in society.
Prosecutors say a letter from the victim was read aloud in court that described the lasting impact of the attack. The letter talked about the victim losing two jobs, and the possibility of never working again because of her injuries. It adds that her physical pain is a daily struggle, along with the emotional, mental, and financial toll.
