PEKIN, Ill. – For most people, America’s birthday is gleefully celebrated with fireworks, but your pets may not feel the same way.
Tazewell Animal Protective Society Executive Director Tori Menke says they see more stray dogs this week than any other week of the year. She says that’s because the fireworks can be extremely stressful for dogs and cats.
Menke says stray pets go up by around 25% during the week of the 4th of July, and suggests keeping them close by anywhere you take them.
“You should be taking your animal out on a leash, even in a fenced in yard, because they can climb the fence, they can dig out, they go straight panic mode, it’s absolutely terrifying for some animals,” Menke said.
Menke suggests keeping your pets inside as much as possible, and to keep them in a crate or kennel if you’re hosting a party. She suggests having full identification for your pet, whether that’s a tag or a microchip, in case they do get lost.
Menke also suggests talking to a veterinarian about medication to help keep your pet calm during fireworks.
