PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters were called around 2:15 a.m. Thursday to a fire in the 1100 block of E. Kansas Street.
The homeowner, who was already outside with police, said the fire started in the kitchen and two of his dogs were still inside.
Crews had the fire put out in about 10 minutes.
The dogs were found and brought outside, one of them did not survive.
The homeowner was taken to a local hospital for medical observation.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
