SPRING BAY, Ill. – A famed fisherman, known as the “Marathon Man” of professional fishing has broken his own record. And he did it on the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
Jeff Kolodzinski began fishing at Sankoty Lakes at 9:11 p.m. Friday in the hopes of catching at least 2,977 fish, one for each of the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks.
Kolodzinski had surpassed 3,000 fish Saturday night with still two hours to spare. The total tops his own record of 2,645 fish, also at Sankoty Lakes, last year. Both unofficial records still must be certified by Guinness World Records.
Kolodzinski was quoted in a news release as saying, “I will say this. The fishing at Sankoty Lakes is smokin’ hot.”
Kolodzinski calls his effort “Mission: 9/11,” raising money for his favorite charity, Fishing for Life, which helps military families and first responders.
A 21-gun salute, the playing of “Taps” and fireworks followed the fishing event.
