SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — New ethics reform has failed to pass the Illinois House.
House members did not accept Gov. J-B Pritzker’s amendatory veto Tuesday night.
The bill was passed earlier this year and in part, would have prevented state lawmakers from working as lobbyists right after they leave office.
Supporters of reforms say the measure is a good start at fighting corruption, but critics like Rep. C-D Davidsmeyer aren’t impressed.
“We’ll just continue to wait for more indictments and more things to slip by, and let people keep abusing these positions. We need to pass real ethics reform, not watered down nonsense,” Davidsmeyer.
The Senate approved the amendatory veto, but the House did not, essentially killing the bill.
Davidsmeyer said the legislation didn’t go far enough to tackle corruption. He argued that they can do better.
“If you ever want real ethics reform, you have to do it. You can’t just wait for the next group to come along and do the right thing. We have to be the people to do the right thing, and this is the time,” Davidsmeyer said.
