WASHINGTON, D.C. – Your cell phone and your radio might set off an alarm Wednesday, but it’s only a test.
FEMA says it and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct a national Emergency Alert System test Wednesday starting around 1:20 p.m. Peoria time.
That’s when a National Emergency Alert test will be sent out to TV and radio stations indicating that the alert signal is only a test.
After that, a similar alert will be sent to wireless phones.
They urge people not to be alarmed, saying the goal is to make sure both systems are still an effective means to send out emergency information, especially in the event of a national disaster.
It will be the seventh time the Emergency Alert System will be tested nationally. Local tests are sent out weekly, and state tests are sent out on the first Tuesday of the month.
