Tuesday night, Peoria City Council passed a 3-percent sales tax on recreational marijuana on a 9-2 vote. The local sales tax would go into the city’s general fund.
The council’s vote did not give the green light to Peoria allowing recreational marijuana sales, that issue will be decided later, along with zoning rules and other ordinances.
Some council members were concerned that the 3-percent sales tax might add to black market sale of cannabis.
A public meeting with the planning and zoning commission regarding recreational marijuana is scheduled for Oct. 3.
The city’s first reading of the planning and zoning ordinance and the possession ordinance is scheduled for October 8, followed by a second reading and City Council vote on October 22.
