PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria Community Development Department has been granted an additional $45,000 by the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) for demolition of abandoned residential structures in the 61605 zip-code.
The money was granted through IHDA’s Abandoned Property Program funds.
Since 2015, the development department has been awarded over $430,000 through the program, which has allowed for 35 structures to be demolished.
Before each house is demolished, Peoria Community Development Department staff first evaluates the structure for rehabilitation, instead of demolition.
Most houses with demolition orders are without plumbing, electrical, or intact HVAC systems.
