PEORIA, Ill. — Animal control officers say home is the safest place for pets on the Fourth of July.
Becky Spencer, Director of Peoria County Animal Protection Services, said fireworks can spook pets, causing them to run. That’s why it’s best to leave pets inside, away from any kind of fireworks.
“For those that are fearful, offer them a place to hide inside, and maybe use some ambient noises like running a tv or radio, to muffle those sounds they’re going to hear,” Spencer said.
Pets will actually find comfort being in their kennel or a bathroom with a closed door, according to Spencer.
“Don’t take them with you to these festivities, if you’re going out, or even if you’re going to your backyard. Pets are inquisitive, and can easily be hurt or spooked by fireworks,” Spencer said.
In case your pet does get out, make sure their identification is up-to-date. If you pet isn’t already microchipped, PCAPS is offering that service free of charge ahead of the Fourth of July.
