CHICAGO — Illinois residents whose driver’s licenses or ID cards are expiring soon won’t need to rush to renew them.
Secretary of State Jesse White has extended the grace period to renew licenses and IDs to January 1, 2022. But, the extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses.
White initially extended the expiration date to August 1, 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic.
“During hot weather, I would suggest residents consider delaying visits to Driver Services facilities,” White said in a news release.
“But if you must visit a facility, please come prepared to wait outside due to continued social distancing efforts, which limits the number of people inside a facility at one time,” said White.
“We are allowing more people in the facilities due to relaxed protocols,” White also said.
The Secretary of State’s Office is also urging people to use online services on its website to renew licenses and ID cards.
