PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria County Animal Protection Services (PCAPS) is in urgent need for cat fosters and adopters as they currently provide shelter and care for 170 cats.
Due to the number of animals being cared for, space is severely limited.
According to PCAPS Director Becky Spencer, June is considered “Adopt-A-Cat Month” as shelters usually see higher intakes of cats during summer months.
“On a typical month, we probably have 60 to 70 cats in the building,” said Spencer. “We have a real need for adopters and foster families.”
Spencer said a couple situations in the area have caused them to take in an influx of cats all at once.
To help offset costs of adoption, PCAPS is offering fee-waived adoptions for a limited time in an attempt to find adopters as soon as possible.
“Every year people come out in droves and are waiting for our fee-waived cat adoption promotion,” said Spencer.
In addition to waiving fees, adoptions and foster home applications are being approved same-day.
PCAPS is also offering a Foster-to-Adopt option for those interested.
“If folks are interested in not committing yet — and they want to foster the animal — we will supply all of the supplies they need to make that happen,” said Spencer. “If they turn out to just be a foster family and bring the animal back, then that’s okay.
“This is pretty stressful for a cat — no one wants to be a cat in a shelter — getting them out of the building for a few weeks gives them a break.”
A complete application must be submitted for approval to adopt or foster, and residents must make an appointment to look at any of the adoptable animals.
To make an appointment, call (309)-672-2440 or email pcaps@peoriacounty.org.
PCAPS is open Monday-Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
