PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria says the first special detail of the new year that’s part of his Anti-Violence initiative is complete.
The chief says seven people were arrested Wednesday, 54 vehicles were stopped, a gun and illegal drugs were seized, and 39 officers from local and state police took part.
Echevarria says among the arrests was that of Mercedes Strong, 21. She was arrested on a charge of Aggravated Unlawful Use after her car was pulled over for speeding near Main and Sheridan, but a handgun and loaded magazine allegedly were found inside.
Police also say Wednesday evening, a juvenile was arrested when a stolen vehicle was discovered at a business near Sheridan and McClure.
Two people fled out of the car on foot, with the 17-year-old driver later being caught. He was released to a guardian on charges of Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, and Possession of Cannabis.
“This is the Department’s first Directed Patrol for 2023. Our officers are just as committed this year as they were last year to place those who commit crimes under arrest. Our job is to keep our community members safe, and we are going to use every tool at our disposal to make sure that happens.” — Chief Eric Echevarria, statement
