SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Republicans in the Illinois House are critical of new legislative districts unveiled last Friday.
The GOP said the new boundaries only benefit Illinois’ Democratic party.
The legislative political boundaries will be used over the next decade to determine local representation. The new maps aren’t getting any praise from Republican Rep. Ryan Spain of Peoria.
At a Monday morning news conference, House Redistricting Committee member, State Representative Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) said “even our worst expectations (on the maps) were exceeded by Democrats. So, the lengths that they’ll go to, to maintain power in this state, know no boundaries at all.”
Republicans have been calling for an independent commission to come up with new political districts, not just one party.
Democrats have said their proposed map reflects the broad geographical and racial diversity of the state.
“The Democratic party, the party of transparency, won’t even share the data that they used for the foundation of these maps with the public,” said Illinois House GOP Leader Jim Durkin.
Public hearings on Illinois’ proposed boundaries will be held this week.
