PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria County grand jury filed charges in a number of criminal cases when they met this week.
Erma Covington, 26, was charged with a Class-X felony count of Aggravated Battery, and a Class-two Felony count of Aggravated Domestic Battery. The charges allege Covington of striking a seven-year-old boy with a belt September 16th at her home on Hillmont Road in Northwest Peoria.
The charges claim the boy suffered great bodily harm because of the assault.
Covington was given a Notice to Apear in Court when she was first arrested. She’s scheduled to be arraigned next Thursday.
A Peoria man has pleaded not guilty to a charge of Burglary filed by a Peoria County grand jury.
Derrell Curtis, 33, was arraigned Thursday. Charges filed Tuesday allege he broke into Heritage Restoration and Design Studio near Voris and Bond in the North Valley in November, 2021. He was arrested this past August for allegedly doing the exact same thing at the same location, with officers finding him allegedly behind a staircase.
Curtis is scheduled to go to trial in last year’s burglary as soon as February 6th. Meanwhile, he’s also scheduled to go to trial in this year’s burglary November 28th.
The grand jury this week indicted Cameron Camper, 21, on a charge of Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking.
Camper allegedly held up a driver October 19th on War Memorial Drive in Peoria Heights, getting away with the woman’s car, until being found about two hours later.
A number of charges including weapons counts and Child Endangerment counts were never officially filed in the case. Camper, who was released from jail a couple days after the arrest, is scheduled to be arraigned next Thursday.
