PEKIN, Ill. – A Pekin business described as a “metaphysical shop” says it was the target of vandalism.
Megan Matthews co-owns “Eye of Newt” — selling spiritual items, and is a gathering place for people needing spiritual guidance.
She recently found a oily residue on store windows with shapes of crosses in them, and surveillance video showed a large group making gestures and chanting and walking around outside last week.
“We’re in 2022. We’re not in the medieval days when you go after people that don’t follow mainstream,” Matthews told 25 News.
The business started during the pandemic, growing out of a hobby. But now Matthews is concerned about safety. She reads from a statement she intended to post at the store.
“Crucifixes will not harm me or rebuke me. They are useless against those who are not evil,” Matthews read.
Matthews says she has another message.
“We need to learn diversity without division,” said Matthews. “Once we do that, we can start healing everything that is wrong with this world.”
A report was filed with Pekin Police, who confirmed Matthews’ account to 25 News.
