WASHINGTON, D.C. — Do you really know what’s in the baby food you feed your children?
Congressman (D-IL 8th District) Raja Krishnamoorthi told WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show”, you probably don’t.
“Dangerous levels of toxic metals, like arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury exist in baby food. And, they far exceed what experts and governing bodies say is permissible,” Krishnamoorthi said.
The Peoria native said the Food and Drug Administration is failing to regulate the baby food industry. And, that companies, left to their own devices, have set internal testing thresholds far exceeding recommended levels.
Though it sounds like it wold be good for your baby, many top baby food brands add what’s known as vitamin and additive pre-mix to the food.
“It turns out that it has a lot of arsenic and lead in it. So, it makes it less safe, not more,” Krishnamoorthi said.
Much of the baby food on the U.S. market does not meet European standards, meaning it would not be allowed on store shelves due to high levels of toxic metals.
Krishnamoorthi said the Food and Drug Administration has turned a blind eye on the baby food industry. He’s introducing legislation that would require the agency to monitor baby food ingredients, and the final product, more closely to make it safer for all families.
